I based my purchase on the reviews on this site. 36 inch stands may seem high, but if you want reference speakers at the correct height, which is placing the middle of the speaker at your ear level, about 46 inches while sitting, these stands are perfect. The screw which mounts the base to the support pole should be recessed(just like the top plate) to allow the stand to sit flush on a hard surface. I puchased stick on felt pads for the bottom which raised the base just enough so the mounting screw doesn't touch the floor. It was an easy $1.50 fix.

The new design does have hole for filling sand or lead shot to increase weight for stability and dampen vibration. The unit istself is made of heavy steel and are heavy enough. Similar unit I saw at [...] went for almots [$] each. The only difference is the wire can be hidden inside the tube. Depending upon the layout of the speaker (mine is a small bookself type surround), no body will see the wire any way. There are 2 clips to keep the wire in place.Highly recommended. This is the second set of stands I bought.

Best stands I have eve owned (also the only ones)
I was very happy with my products solid construction and easy to assemble. These stands will last a life time and they go well with all decor.
I also bought a pair at 30 inches in height (placed next to my sofa Left and Right ) to use as rear stands for my 5.1 system
